MEDIA HOUSE, when you
look at what the media is doing in some other countries, how powerful they are in
challenging their government’s bad policies, in promoting the interest of their
country, citizens and contributing to the overall economy and growth of every
aspect of their country, you begin to imagine what is actually wrong with our
own media house? When you hear media names like C.N.N, B.B.C you will weep for
NIGERIA! You may be forced to ask if media have different meaning for different
countries.
In some other
countries media is a powerful tool in the hands of public through which they
express their agony, joy, and other feelings they may have against the
government or for the government. But in Nigeria the case is different, her
media is so powerless that a journalist could be arrested and jailed without
trial, some will even be killed. You will only see it on flash news and it ends
there. Nothing more!! Police on their own side, who are suppose to
be protecting the lives and properties of the citizens will point a gun at
civilian and say something like this “I
will kill you here and nothing will happen because whatever I say is final”
and sometimes they do kill and say anything they like and it ends there.
In Nigeria you will
see a property owned by government becoming a private property. The name of the
company or institute will simply be changed and nobody will ask questions. If I
may ask; where are the so-called media? I tell you if such happens in some
countries where the likes of C.N.N and B.B.C are, you will know and feel the
power of media. And to some of her children (Nigerian citizens), whatever their
media say is being regarded as false, can you blame them? Say to any one of
them; did you hear the news? And they will quickly reply you; so you are still
listening to those lies? Who do you think should be blamed for this? Some
believe that the nature of the media house in Nigeria is very similar to the popular
saying “Money for hand back for ground”
or you can simply say that the highest bidder wins and takes it all. Is Nigeria
so unlucky?
At a time, an
information minister lied to the point that Nigerians forgot his first name
because they know him as “lie lie” minister. Even Boko Haram got support from some media
houses at that time, just for political reasons and interests. During that time
we saw the effect and power of media house. And now, you will be wondering, thinking
and asking where have we gone wrong? Who is really to be blamed? Is Nigeria so
unlucky? I could remember what ends one of her child’s music career is the fact
that he expressed himself about his mother’s condition in a hit track “Nigeria jaga jaga….., everything scatter
scatter……, poor man de suffer suffer…..” What more can I say?
Sexual abuse
EDUCATION as we already know, is the
process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school
or university. Some will say that true EDUCATION is beyond earning degrees. It is
more than bookish knowledge it means inculcating moral values, positive
thinking, attitude of helping, attitude of giving to the society and ethical
values. With all these definitions, I called it the “power house” of every
nation, the past, the present and the future. In this institution you can
predict correctly the future of any nation. But her (Nigeria) case is different.
In one of the live events I witnessed, a student who worked hard and obtained
first (first class or distinction) grade was told by her lecturer to go and book
a hotel of her choice and call him before he can approve her grade. A lecturer
will insist that he must have carnal knowledge of his female student or else he
will fail her in the subject he is teaching. They called it sex for marks.
However for the fear
of being molested by lecturers, the male students on their own side have to
indulge themselves in cultism etc in order to get through. Not to talk of ASUU strike
and co, but when you hear names like Chika
Obi, Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and so many of them you will be left with
nothing but confusion and questions like where do we go wrong? Why must
everything go wrong? How did our mighty educational system that produced or
laid the foundations for these great men collapsed? Then when you hear the word
“Prof” what usually come to mind is men of integrity of which honesty is their
watch word. Any moment you hear that the person in charge of a particular
organization or Government parastatal is a professor, you will be masked with fear
and doubt will likely disappear because of the confidence people have in them.
However, today we have
“professors” that corrupt politicians
cannot do without, professors that will come to national television, while the
whole nation is watching, and say; “this is how I will conduct the election”
before the election period and still come back after the election and
contradict himself without being ashamed. Why? You will hear that a Vice Chancellor
of a particular University decided to defraud his students and keep them in
school for extra two to three years. When such students run out of patience and
sue him to court, or report the matter to National Assembly, only God knows
their fate. Such a V.C has nothing to worry about. Why? One of the reasons for
this is that his children will never go to that University or any Government University
within the country. He will send them to private Universities and use the same money he got through fraud to pay their
fees, what a shame!!! Why must Nigeria be so unlucky?
When the prodigal sons
and daughters of our corrupt politicians………TO BE CONTINUED
Nigeria lost her pride and recovering it had been a cry far from our reach. Great out pour sire
